TCP performance over GPRS
نویسنده
چکیده
GPRS is the new packet-oriented data service for GSM. Soon it will be possible to take advantage of the features provided by GPRS for Internet Access like fast connection set-up, volumebased charging and staying on-line for long periods. For non-realtime Internet applications TCP is the applied transport protocol. Often it was suspected that GPRS introduces severe performance degradations for TCP-traffic since both apply their own ARQ mechanism. It is well known that layered protocol interactions can have very negative influences. This paper examines with simulations the performance of TCP over GPRS. The behaviour of the protocols will be analysed under various conditions. It will be shown that both TCP and GPRS are well harmonised.

WWW performance over GPRS
In this paper, we present investigative results of HTTP performance over GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). Following on from an earlier study of GPRS[2], in which we uncovered a number of performance problems with TCP (e.g. sub-optimal start-up performance, excess queueing, spurious timeouts etc.), we discuss how and to what extent these limitations can impact HTTP. We also examine some othe...
متن کاملPractical experience with TCP over GPRS
We present the results of a series of experiments used to characterise the performance of a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) wireless data network, hence highlighting issues that software architects should consider when designing applications to run over this soon to be widely-deployed service. In summary, we show that packet Round Trip Time (RTTs) are large ( 1000ms) and can be highly varia...
متن کاملThe Impact of Preemptive Priority in GPRS on TCP Performance: A Measurement Study
GPRS extends the widely deployed GSM system with a more efficient wireless Internet access. In this paper we investigate how a TCP transmission over GPRS is affected when it loses all its resources due to preemption by circuit-switched calls with higher priority. The results indicate that TCP performance is degraded more than necessary, as buffered data is flushed immediately when the GPRS traf...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of retransmission mechanisms in GPRS networks
This paper studies the performance of the three retransmission mechanisms (i.e., RLC/MAC, LLC and TCP) in a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network accessing the Internet. This assessment is done through the end-to-end performance evaluation of Internet applications such as HTTP and FTP over GPRS. A simulation platform including client Mobile Stations, Base Station Subsystems, GPRS Support ...
متن کاملTCP over GPRS: The Effect of Preemption
GPRS extends the widely deployed GSM system with a more efficient wireless Internet access. In this paper we present measurements of GPRS traffic when preempted by circuit-switched calls. The results indicate that TCP performance is degraded more than necessary, as buffered data is flushed immediately when the GPRS traffic is preempted. The time required for error recovery is considerable also ...
